Fortnite patch 42.20: scheduled downtime, matchmaking pause, and is Vortex updated (Sep 16, 2026)

Epic's status page confirms scheduled downtime for Fortnite v42.20. Here is what it means for a Cronus Zen setup and where Vortex stands right now.

What changed

⏰ Scheduled downtime for v42.20 begins at 4 AM ET (8 AM UTC). Matchmaking will be disabled 30 minutes prior.

Source: status.epicgames.com/incidents/m58hlj2pclbc

This is a scheduled event. Epic lists it as running from Sep 17, 08:00 to 09:30 UTC. That is a short window. Matchmaking goes dark first, then the servers come down for the actual update push.

No patch notes text beyond the downtime notice is published yet on that incident page. So we do not know the full contents of v42.20 from this source. We only know the window and the matchmaking cutoff.

What it means on a Zen

A scheduled downtime does not touch your Cronus Zen hardware. Your Zen keeps whatever script is loaded on it. Nothing gets erased by a server restart.

What can change is game behavior. Input handling, weapon balance, or building mechanics sometimes shift after an update, even a routine one. If Fortnite adjusts anything under the hood, a script tuned to the old build can feel slightly off until it is checked against the new one.

Practical advice: do not queue up right at 4 AM ET. Matchmaking closes 30 minutes early, so anything after roughly 3:30 AM ET will not find a game anyway. Wait for the servers to come back before touching your setup.

Vortex status

Vortex 5 is the current public build as of September 16, 2026, 11:47 pm ET. That is the build customers are running tonight, ahead of the scheduled v42.20 downtime.

The desk has not re-tested Vortex against whatever ships in v42.20 tomorrow. This page updates once that check happens.

Operator notes

The desk has not re-tested this build yet. Nobody on the team has looked at Vortex against v42.20, because the patch has not even landed as of this writing. This section updates when it does.

My take: treat scheduled downtime notices as a heads up, not a verdict, because Epic has not published what actually changes in the build itself.

If a player in our Discord reports something odd after the update, we will note that clearly as a player report, not a desk test. For now there is nothing confirmed to report on the Vortex side. Check back after the window closes.

FAQ

Is Vortex broken by the v42.20 downtime? No. Scheduled downtime is a server maintenance window. It does not affect a script already loaded on your Cronus Zen device.

When exactly does matchmaking stop? About 30 minutes before the 4 AM ET start, so around 3:30 AM ET on Sep 17.

Will Vortex need an update after v42.20? We do not know yet. The official incident page only confirms the downtime window, not the contents of the patch. The desk will check once servers return.

Where can I see the latest confirmed build? The Vortex product page lists the current version and last update date: verascripts.com/vortex.

What if my controller stops responding after the update? Try the standard setup steps first at verascripts.com/guides. If it persists, post in our Discord and the desk will look at it.
